Total global chicken meat production is nearly 110 million tonnes per annum.
The largest producer of chicken by weight is the USA, accounting for nearly 18% of world chicken meat production. The highest producer of chicken by numbers, however, is China, accounting for over 14% of world production of broiler chickens.(Year 2018-19)

Average global poultry meat consumption per capita in 2017 was 14.0 kg/head/year. NB. Poultry meat here includes all other forms of poultry; however, broiler chicken meat will form the large majority. (Source: OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook, 2018) Per capita meat consumption will increase by 3.2 kg per annum, with poultry accounting for 70% of this increase. Consumption of meat by 2021 is expected to increase mainly in the developing countries with an extra 3.6 kg of meat per capita compared to the base period. The preferred meat for this increase shall be mostly poultry. N.B. The following figures are slightly dated but more recent ones do not appear to be available from AVEC. India today is the one of the world's largest producer of eggs and broiler meat. The poultry industry in India has undergone a major shift in structure and operation during the last two decades transforming from a mere backyard activity into a major industry with the presence of a large number of integrated players. This transformation has involved a sizeable investment in breeding, hatching, rearing and processing activities.

Change in the poultry population

Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states are first, second and third in poultry population whereas Assam (71.63%) and West Bengal (46.34%) have maximum growth in poultry population during the year 2012 to 2019.

Indian Poultry Farm Market: Drivers

Increasing Incomes Coupled by Changing Food Habits: Broiler meat in the past had been considered to be a delicacy but as a result of increasing levels of urbanization and higher levels of disposable incomes, poultry meat is increasingly seen as less of a luxury product and more as a daily staple. Further with changing food habits and increasing exposure to global cuisines, the Indian population is increasingly converting to a non-vegetarian diet. Poultry meat is preferred over other meat products as it is considered more hygienic and is available throughout the year across the country at relatively lesser prices than fish/mutton.

Large Unpenetrated Market: The annual per capita consumption of broiler meat and eggs remains one of the lowest in the world and is significantly lower than many emerging and developed markets. As a result of the low penetration levels and continuously increasing income levels, however, we expect the per capita consumption of both broiler meat and eggs to increase continuously during the next five years.

Growth in the Food Services Market: Growth in the food services market such as restaurant and fast food joints are also creating a positive impact on the consumption of broiler meat and eggs. Both broiler meats as well as eggs represent important ingredients in both traditional Indian non-vegetarian recipes as well as fast foods.

Growth in the Bakery Foods Market: Eggs represent an important ingredient in bakery foods. The Indian bakery foods market is currently exhibiting strong growth rates. We expect the growth of the bakery foods market to create a positive impact on the consumption of eggs in India.

Poultry production is the fastest growing sector of Indian agriculture having long history of backyard farming. It has been transformed into a full-fledged industry in order to cope with the higher demands for valuable animal proteins (eggs and poultry meat) by an ever increasing human population. Poultry production has been the most dynamic sector of animal production worldwide. In Maharashtra state, the poultry industry has flourished in Private sector. Commercial production of layer poultry birds as well as broiler poultry has been concentrated at the hands of big entrepreneurs, who are also undertaking contract farming activity for the broiler poultry. The role of the state government is to support the rural poultry farmers by provision of improved / low input technology poultry birds, which will be useful and profitable in backyard poultry keeping For promoting the backyard poultry, it is necessary to give the much needed infrastructural support (in form of improved poultry birds/ day old chicks at subsidized rate, hatchery units, training etc.) to the targeted beneficiaries in order to get optimum production from this sector.

This population has substantially increased to 301.60 lakh, (which includes 200.11 lakh backyard poultry birds). Taking in consideration of district-wise poultry population and the estimated annual production of eggs in Maharashtra state was 354.60 crores, with 33 eggs available per capita per year.
